Chronic Kidney Conditions For Transplant

Chronic Kidney Disease, also called Chronic Kidney Failure, involves a gradual loss of Kidney function. One might only realise the symptoms at an advanced stage. Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease can cause dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and wastes to build up in your body. Treatment for Chronic Kidney Disease focuses on slowing the progression of Kidney Damage, usually by controlling the cause. But, even controlling the cause might not keep Kidney Damage from progressing. Chronic Kidney Disease can progress to End-stage Kidney Failure, which is fatal without artificial filtering (Dialysis) or a Kidney Transplant.

The indication for Kidney Transplantation is End-stage Renal Disease (ESRD), no matter the first cause. Common diseases resulting in ESRD include Renovascular disease, infection, Diabetes Mellitus, and autoimmune conditions like Chronic Glomerulonephritis and Lupus. Genetic causes include Polycystic Renal Disorder and a variety of inborn errors of metabolism. The most typical ’cause’ is idiopathic.

Frequently Asked Questions

In comparison to a lifelong Dialysis a Kidney Transplant is relatively economical because the cost of a Transplant will work out cheaper than Dialysis. With a Kidney Transplant you can expect to get back to your normal life quicker than when compared to ongoing Dialysis. The survival rate and life expectancy of Transplant patients are much better compared to people on Dialysis. Studies show that the life expectancy of a person in the age group of 40 live 7.3 years on Dialysis, but approximately 22 years post a Kidney Transplant.

The success rate with Transplants are quite high. Transplants from deceased donors have about 85%-90% success in the first year. Meanwhile, the success rate from live donors stands at 90%-95%. Overall, long-term success rates are good for all ages.

Typically, Kidney Transplantation operation takes about 3-4 hours.

1. Living Donor Kidney Transplant: The donated Kidney is from a living donor mostly a family member or a relative. It’s the most preferred Transplant with positive benefits.
2. Deceased Kidney Transplant: The donor Kidney is from a deceased person in healthy condition.
3. Expanded Criteria Donor (ECD): Donors over the age of 60 years without comorbidities, or donors over the age of 50 years with two comorbidities among Blood Hypertension, death from Cerebrovascular accident, or Terminal Serum Creatinine levels >1.5 mg/dL.

Survival rates are often estimates. They don’t tell you how you’ll respond to treatment or how long you’ll live. To get an individual opinion and clarity on your case its best to speak to your healthcare provider.

Generally, people are able to live healthy and fulfilling lives after a Kidney Transplant. The one-year Kidney Transplant survival rate is 95% and the average three to five-year survival rate is 90%.

Every hospital has its own set of requirements when accepting people as Transplant recipients. The most basic and general criterion includes:

  • End-stage Renal Failure and to be on Dialysis.
  • Late-stage Chronic Kidney Disease approaching regular Dialysis.
  • Life expectancy of at least five years.
  • Full understanding of postoperative instructions and care.

Kidney Transplants are approved on a case-by-case basis. However, there are some general factors that could make a person ineligible for a Kidney Transplant, they are:

  • A serious health condition that makes it dangerous to have surgery, such a recurring (returning) infection.
  • A short life expectancy.
  • Drug or alcohol abuse.
  • No matter what your situation, your healthcare provider can determine whether a Kidney Transplant is a safe treatment option.

Though there is no minimum age for a Kidney Transplant those above 65 years need greater scrutiny for a Transplant. Most patients in need of a Transplant are in the age of 45 and above.

A blood relative may be your best match though a Kidney could also come from a friend or acquaintance whose blood typing, tissue typing, and cross-selection match with yours. O blood groups are considered universal donors as they can donate to any blood type and AB blood groups are considered universal recipients as they can accept from any blood type.
